Hemp has been gaining a lot of attention lately, but why? Recent changes to the law have ended the 80 year federal prohibition on hemp. This opened the door for state regulated hemp programs, hemp research, new hemp businesses and much, much more. But what is hemp, and is it really that great? Let's look a little deeper at what it is and how it can be used.
Hemp is one of the oldest and most versatile crops known to man. It has been grown for thousands of years and used in everything from paper to building material, from clothes to food and even health and wellness. Strong fibers and quick growing cycles provide a sustainable answer for things like plastics, fuel, paper, clothing, and building materials. While the seeds and oils from the plant are packed with nutrition, containing many of the amino acids, minerals, oils, fatty acids and proteins that are essential to our health. Hemp even removes toxins and heavy metals from the ground it's being grown in, improving the quality of the soil for the future!
Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one of the two main naturally occurring compounds in the hemp plant. The other is THC. Both offer strong therapeutic value, though unlike THC, CBD has no psychoactive effects. CBD from hemp is said to be effective in relieving pain, inflammation, and anxiety, as well as aiding your sleep, immune system, mood, appetite, memory and much more. With so many benefits you can expect a number of different ways to enjoy them.
If extracted from the hemp plant, CBD can be used to make oils, salves, sublingual tinctures and sprays, food, drinks, candy or almost anything else you can think of. However, raw hemp flower has a use or two of it's own. Smoking hemp flower (a personal preference of mine), or even steeping it into a tea are a couple of great ways to experience these benefits. Finding the way that's right for you should be based on your needs.
Our bodies crave balance, so when we are balanced we tend to feel healthy and happy. If not, the imbalance will make itself known and we may start to feel sick, tired, sore, anxious, off balance or just "off" in general.
How do we control that? Our body actually has a system for this. It's called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and it is essential in the regulation of our body and its ability to function optimally. It's comprised of 2 receptors, the CB1 and CB2, which are found in the central and peripheral nervous systems and the immune system respectfully. Cannabidiol and other cannabinoids interact with these receptors, whether directly or indirectly, to signal the release of specific enzymes aimed at restoring balance to our bodies.
Hemp has always been used to improve our lives, our communities and our planet. It's safe, natural and beneficial even beyond all the new hype.
